Here we present the web pages of previous seminars and other events of note. They are provided for information only, and will not be maintained further.
2008 Seminar: Power Efficient Electronics Reducing Your Carbon Footprint
This one-day seminar looked at the efficient generation, conversion and use of electrical energy in today's environmentally-conscious technological world.
2007 Seminar: Parallel Computing Everywhere Do Many Cores Make Light Work?
Parallel computing ideas have been around for decades, but very recently we have seen massive adoption of chip multiprocessors from your MP3 player to your laptop and desktop. But is this a fad or a technology push that is unstoppable? Will the technology mean that we will have 100s of processors in our desktop in 10 years time? How will the industry write large numbers of robust applications for them? Will we be able to use all of the processors all of the time, or will thermal limits prohibit this? Will we fail deliver ever more performance for less cost, resulting in the industry stagnating, or can the battles be won? For this one day seminar we invited some of the technology leaders in the UK to answer these and other questions.
2006 Seminar: Mobile TV Technology: Evolution or Revolution?
The 2006 seminar was on the exciting subject of mobile TV technology. We had speakers from Broadcom, Frontier Silicon, Qualcomm, TTP, IPWireless, Microsoft Research, Light Blue Optics, with the keynote speech from Arqiva.
The event was a great success, with a good number of delegates on the day. Slides are now being uploaded onto the website for future reference.
2005 Seminar: Processor Cores --- Putting Silicon IP To Work
The UK is a stronghold of microprocessor design, with many important developments having taken place here over the 30 plus years of the industry. Developments continue apace with many new companies joining the established players in vying for design-ins in applications as diverse as consumer, industrial, networking, automotive, wireless and broadband, to name a few.
This one day seminar looked at some of the exciting developments taking place today in processor design, with presentations from leading companies in the Cambridge area and elsewhere.
Lecture Slides and Notes
Notes from Prof. Sir Maurice Wilkes' Prestige Lecture.
2004 Seminar: Medical Electronics
Hi-Technology at the Cutting Edge
The 2004 seminar was titled Medical Electronics: Cambridge Technology at the Cutting Edge. The two aims of this high-value seminar were to showcase leading-edge medical electronics technologies from both Cambridgeshire and key UK enterprises, and to provide a vibrant atmosphere for meeting fellow engineers and technologists, to share thoughts and views, and to meet new people with a common interest.
Speakers were experts in their field and where possible they, or their company, will had a Cambridge connection. Technologies of interest were those connected to the patient in order to diagnose, treat or prevent health-related matters. Companies who gave talks at this event included Sage Healthcare, Sphere Medical, Thermocore Medical Systems, Pharmaceutical Profiles, Cambridge Consultants, Teraview, and Priory Analysts.
2003 Seminar: CarTronics
With the increasing level of complexity and technology in modern cars, the Cambridge Branch of the IEE organised this exciting one-day seminar on the techhnology that will carry the car (and other automotive machines) well into the next two decades.
With speakers from Daimler-Chrysler, Pi Research, ARM, Cambridge Consultants, and Ricardo Tarragon discussing what industry is developing, a detailed look at controlling fuel cell technology from Prof. Richard Stobart of Sussex University, a very informative presentation from Derek Turner about the London Congestion Charging scheme, and a fascinating keynote address by Douglas Sendelbach on what we might be driving in 2010.
2002 Seminar: World Without Wires
World Without Wires was a one-day seminar for IEE members and affiliates to learn about and discuss what new wireless technologies for computer networks, communications and next-generation mobile services. Speakers from companies at the forefront of wireless development included Radiant Networks, Cambridge Silicon Radio, Microsoft Research, TTP-Com, Scientific Generics, Cambridge Consultants and Invisible Networks. Andy Hopper, Professor of Communications Engineering at Cambridge University, gave the keynote address.
2001 Seminar: Designing Systems on Silicon
The Cambridge area has been known as Silicon Fen for many years, but only recently, with companies like ARM, Broadcom, Cadence, Cambridge Silicon Radio, TTPCom and Virata, has a significant semiconductor business been established here. This Seminar will inform attendees about topics for VLSI IC design, which are key to every-day work at technology companies in Cambridge and its surrounding area. The Seminar will benefit those wanting to learn more about IC design and the 'chip' business, as well as providing a valuable opportunity for persons already engaged to enjoy a day listening, learning and exchanging views about their work.
This seminar brought together about 150 delegates and speakers from a wide range of backgrounds, from practising engineers, to business consultants, university academics, and from as far away as Wales, Sweden and Spain! Everyone came away from the day with something of value, not only fresh insights or knowledge of the silicon design process, but also the opportunity to meet new faces and network with fellow engineers.
2000 Seminar: e-Commerce for People and Business
This One Day Seminar focused on the unparalleled opportunities that the Internet now presents for organisations of all sizes, which are now able to reach a potential market of millions around the world at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.
However, along with this opportunity comes the need for a clear understanding of the new business and legal models necessary to ensure you gain your share of the market. Getting it right calls for the commercial as well as the legal strategies to be right - getting it wrong could be a costly mistake.
At e-Commerce for People and Business we heard from a diverse range of experienced presenters, who shed light on key topics and offered valuable advice to enhance your online presence.
